There is no devil, no "enemy" other than the part of you that has a need to believe in an "enemy." Take control of your life today!
His meaning would depend on the particular context. When he told the Pharisees that their father wasn't God but the devil, he was speaking to their understanding that there was a devil. One teaches by using images and concepts familiar to the student, but that doesn't mean the teacher believes those images. The fiction of the devil has been used by many people throughout history to avoid responsibility for their actions - "The devil made me do it." Yet Jesus in his teachings repeatedly calls people to personal responsibility. The only "enemy" is our own ego and our own fear.
